Bargains galore as prices drop by biggest amount in 14 years

- By Steph Spyro

STORE prices saw their biggest monthly drop last month since 2006 as retailers offered huge discounts to offset the impact of lockdown.

Figures released yesterday showed prices slid by 2.4 per cent in May, following a 1.7 per cent decline in April, according to the British Retail ConsortiumNielsen Shop Price Index.

Clothing and furniture retailers offered heavy discounts in a bid to draw in online shoppers after stores shut.

Chief executive of the BRC Helen Dickinson said: “Shop prices in May fell at their fastest rate since 2006, which was largely driven by the drop in non-food prices.

“Clothing and furniture saw the biggest drop as retailers ran promotions to encourage consumer spending and attempted to mitigate recent losses.”

Discounted

French Connection topped the list of biggest discounts with 90 per cent of its online clothing on sale, in a list published by LovetheSales.com. It offers 25 per cent off its SS20 fashion and 10 per cent off full-price goods if people sign up to their newsletter.

Miss Selfridge was in second place with 83 per cent of all online clothing discounted. Dorothy Perkins, Burton and AllSaints also featured.

Bargains included Wayfair’s Lilah corner sofa, down from £889 to £789 and a M&S Linen Blend floral belted shirt dress down from £39.50 to £15.

A M&S Jersey printed knee-length swing dress is down £10 to £9 and a Miss Selfridge Yellow poplin dress is down from £39 to £23.40. A Dorothy Perkins coral shell clutch bag has dropped from £14 to £7 while a Burton Blue Jasper check suit jacket has fallen from £69 to £44.85.
