Truth or peace is McCanns’ choice

I’m rooting for hair drive-thru

- FUN, FEISTY AND FEARLESS Email me at carole.malone@reachplc.com

IN MY Cooped Up With Carole column this week I said the only two things I’d ever queued for were the Harrods sale and to meet the Pope John Paul II in 1982. I was taking a pop at the mile-long queues at McDonald’s drive-thrus which have just reopened.

Well, yesterday I found something else I’d definitely queue for – Botox!

Florida plastic surgeon, Michael Salzhauer, has set up a Botox drive-thru. He wears a mask, the patients wear a mask and he injects Botox into the forehead and around the eyes (not covered by the mask) while they sit in the car.

Fab! Now all we need now ladies is drive-thru for hairdressers who can do our roots through the car window.

AMANDA Holden is without question an obsessive, narcissistic, self-publicist. That said,

I quite like her but more importantly she rarely gets it wrong where her clothes are concerned.

But this latest outfit which she wore to present her Heart Radio show (when I was a radio presenter, I wore slippers and jogging pants) is wrong on every level. It looks like a mad dog has jumped out at her and ripped off her sleeve. Come on Amanda – standards!

I’VE always been a big Boris supporter but his handling of coronavirus has been shocking. The Government’s indecisiveness means we’re going to have a basket case economy and mass unemployment. It’s introduced quarantine two months too late.

It’s making the wearing of masks on public transport compulsory – two months too late and it’s entire strategy has been based on flawed science. From the start it’s been too little too late and one step forward and one step back. All of which has been a gift to Labour which will use our shattered economy to destroy the Government.

I voted for Boris because I thought he’d be tough and he’d get things done. He’s been a crashing disappointment!

KATE and Gerry McCann have always been clear – they want to know whether their daughter Madeleine is alive or dead because they believe it will bring them peace. They decided long ago that no matter what the awful truth is – they need to know it. But I wonder how sure they are about that today after revelations from German police, who are now convinced that not only is Madeleine dead but that they know how she died. They believe the man who murdered her is convicted German paedophile, Christian Brueckner, who sexually abused young girls, raped and tortured a 72-year-old woman and is a known drug dealer and burglar.

And never mind the questions about how Portuguese, German and British police all dismissed Brueckner as a suspect at countless stages of the 13-year investigation despite the fact he was a convicted paedophile and living in the area at the time Maddie was abducted. That’s a discussion for later. But, for now, I worry whether Kate and Gerry will struggle to find even a scintilla of peace if it’s discovered this monster murdered Maddie.

Perhaps it was better after all this time to live in hope of finding her alive than to know she met her end at the hands of this animal who actually bragged to a friend in a German bar that he’d abducted and killed her.

Whatever agony the McCanns have endured since 2007, surely the knowledge their daughter might have been murdered by a paedophile must be worse than not knowing?

“We will never give up hope of finding Madeleine alive,” Kate has said.

So, what happens when that hope has gone? Because hope is what’s helped them to put one foot in front of the other these past 13 years. It’s what’s kept them living some semblance of a normal life for their 15-year-old twins – the belief that one day Maddie might come home.

My fear is that, without a confession, without a body, it will be impossible to convict Brueckner. It was 13 years ago and whatever evidence might have existed is probably long gone.

And that opens up a fresh hell for the McCanns because it means living with the knowledge that Maddie is dead and the monster police believe did it goes unpunished. But even if police DO find enough evidence to convict him – and there’s a court case – yes, Kate and Gerry will have their truth but at what cost?

Ralph and Denise Bulger’s marriage and indeed their lives were ripped apart when, in court, they heard the terrible details of how their little boy James was murdered.

I can’t pretend to know how the McCanns feel or how they’ll cope but for 13 years they have been kept afloat on a raft of hope. Even the thousands of potential sightings and false leads fed that hope. And if that is now snuffed out by discovering she was murdered by Brueckner, then I fear that knowledge will haunt them for every minute they remain on this earth.

The Bible says, “The truth will set you free.” I’m not sure that’s always true. The truth also has the potential to destroy.

And if the truth turns out to be that Brueckner killed Maddie, it will tear down the fragile walls of happiness the McCanns have had to build around their teenage twins, Amelie and Sean since she disappeared.

Maybe happiness – or some form of it – and hope matter more than a cataclysmic truth.

HILLARY CLINTON and Cherie Blair are among speakers giving talks over the web during London Tech Week next week. Forget Mogadon, forget sleeping pills, forget Rescue Remedy or lavender on your pillow – these two talking technology will have you spark out in seconds.

MODEL Daisy Lowe says she had a breakdown and two stints in rehab after doing Strictly Come Dancing

She says that trying to capitalise on her new-found profile by fitting as many jobs into a day as she could left her stressed, unable to speak and her hair fell out.

Plus she says her grandad died on her first day at Strictly and she had to decide whether to stay or jack it in. She stayed. “I don’t know anyone who doesn’t struggle with their mental health be it addiction, burnout or depression,” Daisy, 31, said.

Two things – first she needs to change the people she mixes with because I know plenty of people her age who suffer from none of the above. And next time TV offers her a show that will bring the fame and fortune she clearly craves – she should just say “No!”

As she could have done with Strictly!

NAOMI CAMPBELL’S chef, Sean John, has been cooking food for her for 10 years and supplies her with the one meal a day she eats – even when she’s flying. He says she’s never ordered food off the menus in his two restaurants and always demands he make her something “creative and soulful”. “She’s an Ital which is a Jamaican word for clean vegetarian style,” he says. Wrong! She’s a spoiled little madam who no one ever says no to which is why she’s the way she is!
