Keep walking and cycling every day to slash risk of early death

A BRISK daily walk or bike ride almost halves the risk of an early death, even if the arteries are blocked.

A study adds that people would be inspired to do the recommended amount of at least two and a half hours of aerobic exercise a week if GPs asked about their physical activity levels.

Exercise is proven to help counter heart attacks, stroke and other life-threatening issues. Professor Alan

Rozanski, a cardiologist at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, said: “Our study showed simply asking patients to rate their level of physical activity, while using a test to look at the plaque in their coronary arteries, markedly improved our ability to predict patients’ risk for dying over their next decade of life.”

His team carried out CT scans on more than 2,300 over-65s to look for coronary artery calcium, the plaque in vessels that can block blood to the heart and brain.

Those who reported less physical activity had the highest death rates – 2.9 per cent a year. But this dropped to 1.7 per cent in those who were exercising. The findings were published in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings: Innovations, Quality and Outcomes.

A TEENAGER has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a boy of two, his mother and two youths were shot.

Piera Hutton, 27, and her son Ace were gunned down in Harlesden, north-west London, on Wednesday night along with the youths in their late teens.

The shooter fled on the back of a moped.

The toddler was in a serious but stable condition in hospital last night. Detective Chief Inspector Rick Sewart said: “As result of this terrible crime an innocent two-year-old-boy is seriously ill in hospital.

“This child was shot in a wanton act of indiscriminate violence. I know people will be shocked and horrified that a little boy should be the victim of a gunman and I need the community to show their support for him, and his family, by telling police what they know.”

Commander Roy Smith, appealed for more witnesses, adding: “This violent incident in itself is shocking but even more abhorrent is the fact that one of the victims is a young child.”

A 19-year-old was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a dawn raid in north London yesterday.
