FRY ‘CHEATED’ AS POSH MISS OUT
HEARTBROKEN Barry Fry last night branded the Football League a “shambles” and a “joke” and claimed his club Peterborough have been cheated out of the £10million prize that comes with Championship football.
Posh were turfed out of the League One play-off positions as the division voted to end the season and decide the final placing on an unweighted points-per-game basis.
That meant Coventry were crowned champions, and Rotherham followed them into the Championship. Wycombe overtook Peterborough to make the four play-off places alongside Oxford, Portsmouth and Fleetwood.
The move also meant that Tranmere dropped into League Two alongside Southend and Bolton. Posh were inside
the play-off places when football was called to a halt because of the coronavirus – but asWycombe had a game in hand, their overall points-pergame average was 76.35 to Posh’s 74.17.
Director of football
Fry stormed: “I am so angry. This is a real kick in the b ****** .We feel cheated. The EFL has been a joke, an absolute shambles.
“I don’t know how clubs could vote to decide on average points-per-game without considering how many home games teams have left, and who the opposition is. I feel for our owner [Darragh MacAnthony]. He is almost suicidal. The Championship is worth £10m to us.”
In League Two, the decision to call a halt to the season was confirmed. Swindon were crowned champions with Crewe and Plymouth also promoted. Cheltenham, Exeter, Colchester and Northampton will contest the play-offs. Bottom club Stevenage could yet escape relegation, with Macclesfield still awaiting their fate after being handed a fresh EFL misconduct charge on June 1.
