Style council’s in fashion

- Mike Ward

OH,THANK heavens. Rylan Clark-Neal is back on TV tonight. I was just about to send out a search party. He’s hosting a new makeover show called YOU ARE WHAT YOU WEAR (BBC1, 8pm), which sounds as though it’s been on before but apparently hasn’t (I think I was getting it confused with one of GokWan’s shows, or possibly that old Trinny and Susannah series, What In God’s Name Do You Think You Look Like?).

Rylan (who I actually like a lot, by the way, just so we’re clear on that) isn’t dishing out the advice himself but leaving that in the hands of five top stylists (I say “top”, I’ve never actually heard of any of them), each with their own distinct touch.

Whenever a punter arrives in need of help (we meet four per show), these stylists decide between them who is best placed to assist. And then that stylist sets about weaving their unique magic. Rylan’s role, ahead of this, is to get each new arrival to open up, to reveal why they really dress the way they do and why they’ve decided it’s time for a change.

So, yes, it does get quite emotional.

First through the door is Rachael, 35, who currently wears nothing but sports gear.

To be fair, Rachel does play a lot of sport but it soon becomes clear there’s more to it than that.

Elsewhere tonight, the deliciously daft vampire mockumentary WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS, starring Kayvan Novak, Natasia Demetriou and the inimitable Matt Berry, returns for its second series.

If you enjoy the first two episodes on BBC2 (10pm,

10.25pm), you can watch all the rest (there’s a further eight) straight afterwards on the iPlayer.

That might seem rather too much for now but if you don’t at least switch to a different channel at this point you’re suddenly going to find yourself watching NEWSNIGHT

(10.45pm) and you know how angry that makes you.

Finally, today is when BLUE PETER (CBBC, 5.30pm) launches its Six Badges Of Summer challenge.

The idea is that viewers can earn up to half a dozen Blue Peter badges, each of a different shade, by completing various tasks, then sending in photos and videos of themselves doing so, I guess to prove they’re not pulling a fast one. Fancy a go? Me too.

First up, we have the Green badge. And how does one earn one of those? “We want to see how you’re saving the planet,” explains presenter Lindsey Russell.

Ah, right. So not just helping to save it, but actually saving it? I single-handedly spare 7.5 billion people from oblivion and for that you’ll send me a badge?

Well, OK, but it had better not be a plastic one.
