Brueckner may appear in reconstruction of night
MADELEINE McCann suspect Christian Brueckner could be flown back to Portugal to take part in a reconstruction of the night she disappeared, it was claimed yesterday.
The move could be the key to unlocking the 13-year-old mystery and would be relatively simple to organise, a Portuguese legal expert said.
Rui Pereira said yesterday: “A number of procedures could be carried out under the umbrella of international co-operation, and the suspect could be flown to Portugal for the practice of judicial enactments that require him to be present.”
He said Brueckner could be hauled to Portugal at any time, unless it was an extradition for trial over Madeleine’s disappearance, which would only take place once he had finished his German jail sentences.
The BBC broadcast a Crimewatch appeal in October 2013 which featured a detailed reconstruction of the events leading up to the time the youngster went missing on the evening of May 3, 2007.
Any reconstruction involving Brueckner would see him asked to make the short journey from the ramshackle home near Praia da Luz where he allegedly stayed at the time to the holiday apartment where he is suspected of abducting Madeleine.
The 43-year-old German is currently serving a 15-month jail sentence in the northern city of Kiel. He was convicted late last year of raping an American OAP in Praia da Luz in September 2005, but is currently appealing his seven-year sentence.
German prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters has admitted authorities do have enough evidence at the moment to put Brueckner on trial.
He added prosecutors want information from people on the places he has lived so they can search for Madeleine.
