Attenborough’s latest adventure... from his own home

- By Nicola Methven

SIR David Attenborough has been working during lockdown to ensure his next natural history series is ready on time.

The esteemed presenter, who turned 94 last month, has been filming links in his garden and recording voiceovers from a room in his house – with a duvet taped on a wall for sound insulation.

The show, called Perfect Planet, is due to be broadcast by the BBC later this year. BBC natural history commissioning editor Jack Bootle said that Sir David’s efforts at his home in Richmond, south-west London, should ensure there is no delay to the landmark series.

He added: “I am confident that it will hit the screens. There’s small amounts of filming that remains to be done with Sir David. Of course he also needs to record the voiceover, and there are some challenges involved with doing that during a time of lockdown.

“But assuming no disasters happen, that series will air as planned in the autumn, which we’re all very excited about.” Last week, Sir David was working on the final episode with producer/director Nick Gordon and dubbing mixer Graham Wild, who were distanced from the star. It examines the dramatic impact of the newest global force of nature – human beings – on the planet.

Sir David said in February: “To preserve our perfect planet we must ensure we become a force for good.”

Earlier episodes will look at other forces of nature, including, oceans, weather and volcanoes.

The series promises to take viewers on “a stunning visual journey that will change the way we see our home”.
