IT’S NOT OUR DAY

NUNO HAS MESSAGE OF HOPE

NUNO ESPIRITO SANTO is hopeful that the Black Lives Matter campaign will spark lasting change.

Wolves’ Portuguese boss, below, is the only BAME manager in the Premier League and joined his players taking the knee before kick-off in their opening game at West Ham after the coronavirus shutdown. He praised Burnley for their actions after a banner saying “white lives matter Burnley” was flown over the Etihad before the Clarets’ defeat by Manchester City on Monday.

Nuno, whose side face Bournemouth tonight, said: “Burnley already condemned the banner and the situation. It is people misunderstanding Black Lives Matter – they miss the point. Maybe the message is not getting through and it will take time. But now is not the point to not keep on going, that wouldn’t make sense.

“What really matters is respect for the next human being. For me personally it is very difficult because I come from a mixed race family. This is something which is a big mess in my head how people can see differences among us.

“I think us as humanity will reach a point of equality.”

DANIEL FARKE ranted against “disrespectful and arrogant” critics for eight minutes yesterday before accidentally turning his Zoom camera off in his ire.

The Norwich boss was criticised after his bottom-of-the-table side were beaten 3-0 at home by Southampton in their opening game of Project Restart.

And his emotions spilled out before the match against Everton.

Farke said: “I have always been selfcritical. So I am quite relaxed about myself. But my coaching staff?

“They have been labelled because they did not realise what was happening in the game, not proactive, not flexible, stubborn, naive, inexperienced, too blind to see the obvious. I’ve

never heard poorer analysing.

“We changed our base formation four times – I have never been that pro-active, flexible or adaptable within a game here.

“Be a bit more calm, more objective. Be a bit more respectful and also not that arrogant.

“That is why I get angry but this is what you get when you lose the game.

“We all think we are experts and that is allowed.

“I have no clue with cooking. So if I go to a restaurant and the food is not tasty, I would never say the chef needs to give this five more minutes in the oven and use a bit more lemongrass. But in football this is allowed.” After Farke’s screen went blank, he reappeared sheepishly to say: “First of all, I have to apologise – I was a bit enraged and could not press the right buttons. “It’s the ones who think they have already won the Pulitzer Prize or a coaching course [who make him angry].”

Farke draws another blank in rant at ‘arrogant’ critics
