A warm welcome... but pack a mask as well as flip-flops

-

TRAVEL restrictions vary across Europe. Here is what tourists can expect if they travel to some of the most popular destinations.

France: Travel is possible but those arriving from Britain have to submit to a voluntary 14-day quarantine in response to the UK’s self-isolation rules.

Unlike many countries France did not shut its borders in response to the coronavirus outbreak.

Spain: The perennially popular sunshine destination attracts 80 million tourists every year, with the industry providing 12 per cent of the country’s income.

It opened its borders to British holidaymakers on June 21 and tourists do not have to quarantine.

However, hygiene controls are in place, with arrivals required to wear masks in public and observe strict social distancing rules.

In the Spanish beach town of Canet d’en Berenguer, near Valencia, beachgoers can book appointments via a mobile app.

The beach has been divided into a grid of socially distanced sites, with staggered arrival times and the option to choose either a morning or afternoon slot.

Greece: British travellers spend £2.7billion in the country every year but will have to wait to find out when they can visit.

Its government previously declared regular passenger flights to its two main airports could restart in a “bridge phase” from June 15-30 but it will remain off limits to Britons until June 30 at the earliest.

Turkey: Hotels, bars and restaurants have reopened but tourists and residents face a £104 fine if they do not wear a face mask in public. Unlike here, where masks are only mandatory on public transport, Turkey requires them even in shops and restaurants.

Portugal: There will be health screening on arrival but travellers will not need to self-isolate.

Foreign minister Augusto Santos Silva said he hoped to agree a deal by the end of the month which would waive quarantine laws for people returning from the country.
