Lloris counting on a confidence trick

‘WE LOST BELIEF BUT WIN CAN FIRE UP SPURS AND HARRY’

- By Matthew Dunn

HUGO LLORIS has scoffed at suggestions that Tottenham cannot offer Harry Kane the stage he “deserves”.

But the Spurs skipper admits there is still a lack of the confidence in the squad as they continue to feel the fallout of a turbulent 12 months.

Last year, Tottenham reached the Champions League final after a stunning semi-final win away to Ajax, having already knocked out Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund.

Now, despite beating West Ham 2-0 on Tuesday, Spurs are struggling to even qualify for next season’s competition as they trail fourthplaced Chelsea by six points, having played a game more.

That has raised questions about whether Spurs can still give England captain Kane, above, a big enough stage.

“It’s not only about Harry,” said Lloris. “We all want to play in the greatest competition like the Champions League but you get what you deserve.

“We are talking about the club, we cannot talk about just one player because we are all involved and if the club doesn’t achieve the ambition then we are all guilty.

“It’s not fair to say one or the other deserves better. We are all working for the club and, of course, the top four will be very, very difficult.” Kane tore his hamstring in January and even though he is fit again and back on the goal trail, Lloris senses there is something missing.

“You can still feel a lack of confidence within the team and this win will help us to improve,” he said. “When you win, you can build something and, hopefully, it will help us to push for the next seven games. “It will be a big battle for the Champions League and we must be ready. We know we cannot drop points any more and every game can count at the end of the season.” Kane is key to that process. He lay on the ground after his late goal on Tuesday and seemed to be processing the emotions of his first strike of an injury-plagued 2020.

“Harry will need the confidence too and this goal will help him step up for the rest of the season,” said the goalkeeper.

“It’s not easy because after six months without games you still need to feel the right feelings but he’s working hard, he’s very ambitious and he will give his best until the end.

“Now, his target is to repeat the goals and help the team to finish as high as we can.”

If we don’t reach our aim we are all guilty
