NHS hero finally gets to hug son for first time in 13 weeks

AN NHS nursing assistant has hugged her four-year-old son for the first time in 13 weeks.

Sinead Gill said it “was the best day ever” as she squeezed Blake after three months apart.

He had been staying with his grandparents Jack and Betty, both 58, to protect him from the risk of infection as his mum worked on a Covid-19 ward.

Sinead, 31, who is employed at Manchester Royal Infirmary, and her partner Tom Mitchell, 28, had only seen Blake through a window a couple of times although they video-called him every day.

When they went to collect him, he ran into their arms.

Sinead said yesterday: “It was amazing, the best day ever. He’s my little boy, he’s my world.

“It’s his birthday next month so I really wanted him to be home for that. I couldn’t have coped not having him here for his birthday.

“It was the best feeling ever being able to hold him and hug him and not have to see him through a window and tell him he can’t come any closer.

“He gave me a massive hug and wanted to go and get his toys and play in his bedroom.” Blake said: “I’m so happy I could come back and stay here forever.”

She made the decision to keep him away from home in Chorlton, Manchester, on March 31.

She said: “I had been off work poorly and when I was going back I knew my ward was now a Covid ward. I was not sure what to expect, but my parents usually look after Blake when we’re at work so I didn’t want to run the risk of infecting them.We decided the best thing would be for Blake to stay with them until the situation on my ward improved.

“We thought it might be a month but it ended up being 13 weeks – the hardest of my life.

“My head knew it was the right decision, but I had to convince my heart.”
