Paramedics knifed by man they tried to help

- By Michael Knowles

A MAN armed with two knives was Tasered by police after stabbing two paramedics in the chest yesterday.

Police believe the man was suffering a mental health crisis when he allegedly attacked a female and male paramedic just after they had entered his house to help him.

Neighbours reported hearing a “blood-curdling scream” and medics crying “help, help, we’ve been stabbed” as they rushed back out of the house.

The 52-year-old then came to the doorway armed with two knives before police Tasered him and took him into custody. The suspect’s mother had originally called the emergency services, amid fears he was intending to self-harm at the property in Wolverhampton.

“The guy was stood in the porch holding these knives.

“Then the police came in and shouted ‘Taser’ and then they Tasered him.”

Both paramedics were last night said to have escaped life-threatening injuries and were being treated at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, in Birmingham.

Crisis

Ambulance chief Nathan Hudson said: “They were conscious throughout and speaking when I went to see them in hospital.

“It was a harrowing scene and a harrowing place to be.”

Supt Simon Inglis, of West Midlands Police, said: “It is believed that the gentleman may have been suffering a mental health crisis.”

Assaults on emergency service workers have risen by almost a quarter in a month, latest figures revealed.

The National Police Chiefs Council said attacks increased by 24 per cent in the four weeks to June 7.
