Matic thrilled to be part of bright future at United

- By Gideon Brooks

NEMANJA MATIC believes Manchester United are in the “best moment” since his arrival at the club.

And he insisted it could trigger a sustained period of success under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Serbia midfielder, 31, has been rewarded for his part in United’s revival under Solskjaer with a contract extension that will keep him at the club until 2023.

“I think that especially now the team is in a very good moment,” he said.

“I think it’s the best moment since I came here so I hope that we can still improve and in the years in front of us that we can bring a lot of success to this club.”

Matic will be just shy of his 35th birthday at the end of his new deal.

But with United having one of the youngest squads in the top flight, his old head could be crucial to balance things out.

It has been a huge turnaround for Matic, who had looked to be on his way to the periphery of Solskjaer’s plans earlier in the season.

His limited opportunities were chiefly guiding fringe players through a Carabao Cup or Europa League clash, with top-flight outings limited to only two starts in the first half of the season.

Yet either side of lockdown Matic has looked a different player.

And after recapturing the sort of form that won him a Premier League title with Chelsea, he has now become invaluable in United’s midfield.

“We have a young team but we have a few experienced players who try to help the young ones to improve,” said Matic.

“I think that we have a perfect mix of players and that can help us in the future, for sure.”
