Depp’s lawyer to15 fight for Coleen in battle of Wags
COLEEN Rooney has hired Johnny Depp’s celebrity lawyer to represent her in the “Wagatha Christie” legal battle with RebekahVardy.
Yesterday it was claimed Coleen, 34, has instructed barrister David Sherborne to fight claims she libelled the wife of Leicester City striker Jamie in an extraordinary row on social media.
Rebekah, 38, claims she suffered death threats and was left feeling suicidal after Coleen accused her of leaking stories about her former Manchester United star husband Wayne, also 34.
Mr Sherborne, who specialises in media cases, has also represented football stars David Beckham, Ashley Cole and Paul Gascoigne as well as Meghan Markle, Princess Diana and Donald Trump.
He is due to plead Mr Depp’s case in closing speeches at the High Court tomorrow at the end of the Hollywood star’s explosive threeweek battle with a newspaper which accused him of being “a wife beater”.
Erupted
The battle of the Wags erupted after Coleen turned detective and claimed to have unmasked the source of information about her private life which was being made public.
She revealed how she had spent five months slowly limiting the number of friends who could see her updates on Instagram until only Rebekah’s account remained.
Coleen claims she then posted a fake story, which was later published in a red-top newspaper.
Rebekah, who denies being the source of the leaks, claims Coleen’s accusation on Twitter and Instagram last October unleashed a barrage of social media abuse.
The Wag who was seven months pregnant at the time, allegedly suffered severe anxiety attacks and insomnia and was hospitalised three times. In court documents her lawyers said her stress was so bad she “had concerns about losing her baby or going into early labour”.
And her legal team claimed England star Jamie, 33, was mocked during games.
Rebekah’s lawyers said Coleen’s “malicious” 230-word post was written in a “calculated and deliberate manner” and “designed to cause very serious harm”.
The papers filed at the High Court say she continued “to suffer severe and extreme hostility and abuse as a result of the post”.
They recounted how on June 3 when police announced a new suspect in Madeleine McCann’s disappearance “highly distressing” tweets alleged she was the suspect.
The lawyers’ documents said Rebekah believed she was “made a scapegoat” by Coleen “for past ‘leaked’ stories that have been published about the defendant and her husband, in particular about their marriage, which have in fact come from the defendant’s friends, at times even with the defendant’s approval”.
