TV Kate and children in motorway blow-out terror

- By David Pilditch

SHAKEN Kate Garraway has told how she battled to keep control of her car when a tyre exploded on a motorway as she took her children on their first post-lockdown trip.

The Good Morning Britain TV host wrestled with the wheel of her Volvo estate as traffic roared past.

She later thanked police who came to her rescue after the “utterly terrifying” incident yesterday.

Kate, 53, has been battling heartache as her husband Derek Draper, 52, fights for life in hospital after being struck down with coronavirus in March.

The blow-out happened in Kent on her first trip with children Darcey, 14, and Billy, 11, without their father.

Posting images of the shredded tyre and one of her with her rescuers, she said: “Thanks to our amazing saviours Liz and Mark from Kent Police who rescued me after a full tyre blow-out on the motorway!!!

“Never had one before – utterly terrifying.

“Managed to keep control of car but couldn’t get off motorway as no hard shoulder. When the AA said they couldn’t come for an hour, then rang after half-an-hour to say might still be an hour, had no choice but to call the police.

“They were so brilliant and got us to safety and we are now on way home in taxi, shaken but safe.

“It’s first time have taken kids out without Derek too, but we are safe.”

Kate’s close shave came days after she told viewers that nurses said

Derek, a former political adviser, looked “focused and engaged” when they put Good Morning Britain on.

She said Derek had endured a “tough week” following big falls in his blood pressure and leg swelling.

Kate says she and the children FaceTime Derek in hospital and play him Bob Dylan songs and his favourite TV shows.
