LEWIS GETS A WARNING

- By Matt Maltby

LEWIS HAMILTON can celebrate a record-stretching seventh British Grand Prix triumph on Sunday – but his Mercedes boss has warned him not to get over-confident.

The six-time world champion arrives for the first instalment of back-to-back races at Silverstone in imperious form and has a five-point title lead over team-mate Valtteri Bottas.

After a miserable start to the season, Hamilton has crushed his opponents at the past two races and a sixth win in seven years at home will move him closer to equalling Michael Schumacher’s record title haul.

But Mercedes chief Toto Wolff is wary that one bad race can turn the title pursuit on its head.

He said: “We’re one of only two teams that have finished all races with both cars this year and we know how quickly a DNF can make a lead in the points disappear.

“It’s a good reminder to us all that we have to stay vigilant and even the smallest mistake can cost us many points

“We enjoyed very good results at the British Grand Prix in recent years, but we all know Babe Ruth’s famous quote: ‘Yesterday’s home runs don’t win today’s games’.

“There’s no entitlement to a good result because you had a strong showing in the past. We will have to bring our A-game to stay ahead of our competitors.” Hamilton’s bid for more Silverstone history will have a different feel to it with the race being played out in front of empty grandstands for the first time ever.

And Wolff has promised to put on a spectacle for the fans watching on TV.

He said: “We know they will be rooting for us from home, so we’re determined to show our gratitude for their support by putting on a great show for them.

“These are the fastest F1 cars ever built and it will be thrilling to see them on the iconic Silverstone circuit.”
