Thank you for the music we Abba-solutely love dancing to

- By Steph Spyro

ABBA’S Dancing Queen reigns as the nation’s top floor filler more than four decades after its release.

The iconic Swedish band’s 1976 disco hit has been voted our favourite song to dance to.

It was followed by the Dexy’s Midnight Runners foot-stomper Come On Eileen and It’s Raining Men by the Weather Girls, both of which were hits in 1982.

And music lovers generally opted for golden oldies rather than the latest hits. The only songs from this century in the top 10 are Pharrell Williams’ Happy from 2013 and Beyonce’s 2003 Crazy In Love.

The study, to mark the screening of Virgin Media’s V Festival with a virtual twist, found 56 per cent of the 1,500 people polled felt music put them in a good mood.

Some 40 per cent said a good tune fills them with energy, while 34 per cent said music reminds them of happy times.

Cilesta Van Doorn, of Virgin Media, said: “This research shows just how much we love music but also the way in which dancing is a way to feel connected with our family and friends.”

More than half of those polled said they missed dancing at festivals and gigs, or on nights out with friends and family. And festival fans are even missing the less enjoyable parts of attending a festival – with 15 per cent feeling nostalgic about queuing for the loo.

Ms Van Doorn added: “We hope three nights of great music and headliner tips on how to re-create the festival experience will have people off their sofas and dancing in their living rooms and gardens.”

● Virgin Media’s V Festival is on ITV2 Friday, Saturday and Sunday 7pm.
