PICKS OF THE DAY

-

Comedy: Semi-Detached, BBC2, 10pm

Lee Mack looks like Paul Chuckle in this comedy. There, it’s been said and viewers will not be able to unsee the comparison now. In the third episode, Mack’s put-upon anti-hero struggles his way through yet another farcical 30 minutes of his life. Tonight, Stuart (played by Mack, left, with Samantha Spiro) and his extended family take a ferry trip to scatter the ashes of a loved one at sea. However when the hapless hero goes looking for his diarrhoea medication in his car, he discovers a stowaway, some class A drugs and some pretty explicit literature prohibited by maritime law. Why does it always happen to him? Co-starring Patrick Baladi, Frances Barber and Clive Russell.

Comedy: Mandy, BBC2, 9.30pm and 9.45pm

Diane Morgan was one of the hidden gems in Ricky Gervais’ incredibly popular Netflix series After Life. This comedy series was written by and stars Morgan (left) and is thoroughly enjoyable. In the first episode tonight, Mandy takes in a guest from Russia after advertising her home on Airbnb – and they soon become more than friends. But can he be trusted? Later, Lola has not had a customer in her beauty salon for two days so Mandy suggests she introduces fish pedicures.

Travel: Wonders Of The Coast Path, ITV, 8pm

Sean Fletcher’s walk around the Wales Coast Path reaches Carmarthen Bay and the Gower Peninsula, an area known for its peaceful estuaries, sandy beaches and limestone cliffs. At Pendine Sands he hears the story of Wales’ land-speed record holder and sees his original car roar up the beach. Sean (above, with Gower conservation ranger Kathryn Thomas) also tries to reach the end of Worm’s Head.

Documentary: Can Sex Offenders Change? BBC1, 10.45pm

Hard to view in places but a brave piece of television. Becky Southworth (above) is the daughter of a convicted sex offender and here she investigates the world of sex offender rehabilitation. Filming in anonymous locations, she talks to a number of men living in the community, finding out what treatment is available to stop them reoffending.

Film: The Bank Job, Film4, 9pm

Jason Statham took the central role here as the 1971 Baker Street robbery was brought to the big screen. A London car dealer is persuaded by an old flame to rob a bank. The heist goes off without a hitch, leaving the crooks in possession of cash and jewels worth millions – as well as a safety deposit box containing top-secret information the government and security services are determined to keep buried. Factbased crime thriller, starring Statham (right).
