Harry’s out for Markle to sparkle

-

JMS Markle isn’t hanging about in her bid to conquer the States, is she? She’s definitely building herself a big profile over there, surrounded by rich and famous friends in beautiful Santa Barbara.

Her latest online posting of a chat with feminist heroine Gloria Steinem about the importance of women voting in the upcoming US presidential election was a masterstroke of positioning.

Steinem is still an influential figure in the lives of all us ’70s feminists (although, and this is not very sisterly of me, her appeal has always owed a lot to her Michelle Pfeiffer looks, and at 86, she’s still extraordinary).

Steinem and Sussex (below) discussing feminism and voting in Markle’s stunning Montecito garden is an amazingly powerful image. We know Meghan intends to vote and we know it will certainly not be for Trump. She’s extremely ambitious and it seems ridiculous to say she will go far, considering who she already is, but she is letting us know she’s heading for the stars.

Meghan is beautiful, socially committed, rich, and married to a prince.

And there’s the rub.

What about Harry? As Markle sparkles, Harry is fading gently into a shadow of his former impish self.

His familiar joie de vivre is now swamped in the wash of his vibrant wife.

What’s going to happen to our lovable Prince Hal?Will he be a sort of house-husband, pottering about in his California chateau, bringing up Archie, while his wife cavorts on the international stage?

In her Steinem chat, Meghan reminded us that Harry is a feminist too. “I love that when he just came in he said, ‘you know that I’m a feminist too, right Gloria? It’s really important to me that you know that’.”

Meghan then said: “And I look at our son and what a beautiful example that he gets to grow up with a father who’s comfortable owning that, as part of his own self-identification.”

Hmm.Well, I may be an old cynic, but I think my husband would cringe if I talked about him like that.

Still, does any of it matter, as long as Harry’s happy? Probably not. But it’s sad that it’s come to this. Meghan told Steinem she was “glad to be home”. Harry is obviously very glad he’s not. For now.
