HENDRICK BRUSHES OFF MILAN LINK BUT IS STILL DREAMING OF EUROPE

- By Dave Armitage

JEFF HENDRICK revealed he tuned in to a little bit of parklife before clinching a dream move to Newcastle.

The Republic of Ireland star admits everything was a bit of a blur when clubs such as AC Milan began to chase his signature.

The 28-year-old midfielder had run down his contract at Burnley and found he was suddenly in demand so he kept himself fit by going down the local park.

Hendrick said: “It was a really nice feeling when I was told AC Milan were interested. Everyone knows how massive that club is so it gave me a real confidence boost.

“But I’m glad to have come here and I can’t wait to get started. It’s been very strange the past couple of months.

“I got myself a ball and some cones and went down the local park. There were people with dogs walking around but it was fine. The main thing for me was to keep ticking over.”

Hendrick believes he can help Newcastle secure a top-10 spot, with European football a not too distant hope.

He added: “I’m delighted. This is a massive club and once the offer became solid this is where I wanted to come.

“I don’t see why we can’t finish in the top half. Everybody here wants that so it’s up to us to try to do it.

“We need to try to get a few points on the board early and then see where we’re heading in the table.

“I think this club should be – and are – aiming for a top-10 finish and then try to improve each year.”

Hendrick is ready for the intensity and scrutiny of playing for the Geordies – where the team is the focus of the whole town. He added:

“I’m looking forward to that. I think it’s good to have demands put on you. It keeps you honest.

“I really enjoy full stadiums. Big stadiums bring the best out of me so I can’t wait to play here when it’s full.”

And Hendrick insists he can bring goals to Newcastle. “I talked to Steve Bruce on the phone and he was brilliant. Now it’s my turn to repay him.

“I can definitely bring more goals. I have always wanted to score more and it’s something I want to add to my game.

“I’m excited about this. I had a great four years at Burnley but I needed a new challenge. This was my decision. I didn’t really bother talking to anyone else about it.

“I can’t wait for the fans to be back. We don’t know when that will be but it will be a nice feeling.”
