Three Britons probed over Corfu death of mum hit by speedboat

- By Paul Jeeves

THREE young Britons are being investigated over the death of a mum of four who was struck by a speedboat propellor off Corfu.

Claire Glatman, 60, also from the UK, was declared dead after she was pulled from the sea by other bathers at the popular Avlaki beach on Monday morning.

Claire, who owned a luxury villa on the Greek island with her property developer husband Mark, suffered catastrophic injuries to her lower body after becoming entangled in the propeller shortly before 10am.

Yesterday it emerged that a trio of Britons are being probed over the horrific incident. Their families also own homes on Corfu.

Claire, from the village of Well in North Yorkshire, was swimming with a friend in shallow waters when she was struck by the speedboat. It is believed that the vessel, which hi h was pulling lli a waterskier, t ki l left ft the scene without stopping.

Several hours later a “suspicious” boat was spotted in the water and pulled out at Gouvia Marina, a coastguard base around 17 miles from Avlaki. It is being examined by forensic investigators.

A coastguard said of Claire: “She lost so much blood from wounds sustained t as a result of the propeller hitting her. There were wounds to her legs, arms and body.”

The mum was on holiday with her multi- millionaire businessman husband and one of their daughters.

The couple’s three other children are understood to have flown out to Corfu following Claire’s death.

The family are regular visitors to the island, with Claire being described as “extremely popular” with the ex- pat community there.

In Britain she was a trustee of the church charity Hospital of St Michael the Archangel, in Bedale.

A post- mortem was scheduled to be carried out yesterday at Corfu General Hospital. A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are in contact with the local authorities following reports that a British woman has died in Corfu.”

Tributes were being paid to Claire on social media. One friend wrote: “She was an absolutely lovely woman. Very much loved on this island. This is a huge tragedy.”

Another added: “She was a very good and genuinely nice person.”
