This is barking ... why was I done up like a dog’s dinner?

- By Mark Reynolds

THESE dogs look like they’re straight out of a furry- tale as they parade in fancy dress.

Owners were asked to make their pets look like characters from Alice In Wonderland or Charlie And The Chocolate Factory to raise money for a good paws – sorry, cause.

Perhaps deserving of the crown was boxer Ruby, who was dressed as the Queen of Hearts by her owner Louise Behrendt.

However the hilarious hound didn’t look all that happy about it.

Also going for the Alice theme was Keegan the West Highland White Terrier, who wore a Mad Hatter costume.

Dolly the chihuahua was dressed as Alice herself, albeit a pint- sized one. It was slightly less clear what other dogs were meant to be, as they pattered about in pink frills.

The event took place at Jodhpurs Riding School in Tockwith, North Yorks, which boasted it was the first doggy pageant in the north of England.

Money raised went to an animal rescue centre.

Organisers wrote on Facebook: “We pride ourselves on making our events as entertaining as possible and to introduce new ideas.”

No doubt it’s left many people barking with laughter...

AMOROUS pair Archie and Bella were all set to have their passion dampened when Covid- 19 got in the way. Instead they became the proud parents of 15 puppies. The unexpected delivery came after lockdown forced owner Mary Killing to cancel the “non- urgent” vet’s appointment to have the pair neutered. Mary, 51, did her best to stem the advances of the Irish setter/ English spaniel towards the Labrador/ Collie.

Nappies

But getting both dogs to wear nappies, smearing them in VapoRub, and just trying to keep them apart was not enough – and they finally mated. Mum- of- five Mary said Bella had started panting heavily and gave birth on her lap as she watched Game Of Thrones. She was moved on to a duvet as 16 pups – eight male and eight female arrived. Sadly, one died. Mary said: “I was in absolute shock. The vet had told us she was going to have eight to 10 puppies. We had to get a suitcase to put them into to count them as they were wriggling all over the place. “It was just phenomenal. We were in awe.” Mary, of Limerick, Ireland, has been able to care for the litter while working from home. The family are keeping first- born Walter – named by 11- year- old Isaac after Where’s Wally because he kept hiding. The rest are going to relatives and friends. Mary added: “It’s been tough, it’s been hard work.”
