Can I really predict my future with an egg?

The uncertainty of the past few months has led to a surge of interest in psychics, but what if everything you need to turn clairvoyant could be found in your own home? Anna May Nagle focuses her third eye on finding out...

Life has been turned upside down in the past six months, and people around the world have been looking for new ways to make sense of the chaos around them.

So perhaps it’s no surprise that internet searches for psychics have increased by 250 percent since lockdown began, according to a report by Psychic World.

However, with a professional reading costing in the region of £ 80, many people are also turning to DIY clairvoyant practices they can try at home for free.

Jayne Wallace, of the Psychic Sisters, based in Selfridges, London, is a psychic with 35 years experience.

“Since the coronavirus outbreak I have never been busier,” she says.

“People want answers to important life questions, but not everyone can afford to pay at the moment because of job losses and reduced hours. I would definitely recommend trying to do some predictions at home.”

Following Jayne’s advice, I attempted to divine answers to some pressing questions I’d been pondering using household objects and a little bit of psychic know- how.

SHARP PRACTICE

Knife- spinning

SHOULD WE MOVE HOUSE?

Psychic skill: Knife- spinning What is it? If you’re unable to make a decision about something, draw a circle on a piece of paper and write different answers around the outside.

Place a kitchen knife in the centre of the page and spin it. Where it lands will give you your answer.

My husband Joseph and I are 60 and had always planned to move out of London and enjoy life somewhere near the south coast. But because our children are all settled in the capital, we are now wobbling about whether to move.

I placed a silver dinner knife in the centre of my circle, with six possible locations written around the edge.

On its first spin, the knife stopped at Hastings, a town that has always been top of our relocate wish list.

I spun the knife again, and to my astonishment it stopped seven out of the eight times on Hastings. I got the message, loud and clear, that my husband and I should be moving to the seaside.

WILL I BE GRANNY TO A BOY OR A GIRL?

Psychic skill: Pendulum swing What is it? Dangling a weighted object from a thread or chain, you ask a yes/ no question and see which way the pendulum starts to swing to get your answer.

I suspended a darning needle on a thread, and first established its yes- and- no swing direction by asking silly questions like “do pigs fly?” and “does one plus one make 11?”

It seemed that for no, the needle would mostly swing to the left. I asked what gender the new baby due in our family would be and three times the pendulum swung to the right. I am thrilled to report that, according to the needle and thread’s prophecy, I will be knitting pink booties.

WHEN IS MY NEXT HOLIDAY? Psychic skill:

Bibliomancy What is it?

This ancient practice involves choosing random words from a book while keeping your eyes closed, and being able to divine their meaning.

Bibliomancy, or book reading, is a tried and tested way to glimpse what lies ahead.

Although I am an avid reader, I am also a Kindle convert, and there are only cookbooks in my house – so I used the first that came to hand, Jamie Oliver’s Veg. I opened the book on a random page, and with closed eyes placed a finger on the text.

I repeated this three times. My three attempts yielded the words “place”, “heat” and “pomegranate”.

Pomegranates grow in Cyprus, Italy and Spain, all hot destinations on our wish list for next year, so I finished newly hopeful about summer 2021.

SHOULD I INVEST MY SAVINGS?

Psychic skill: Egg divination What is it? Believed to originate in Ancient Greece, this method involves dropping raw egg white into cold water and reading the shapes the white makes as it settles.

My husband did a lot of eye rolling as I tried egg divination – or oomancy to give it its proper name. I had been offered a chance to invest some of my savings in a new start- up business, and have been uncertain about whether to say yes. After separating the yolk from the white, I dropped the white into a pint glass full of cold water. I’d read that bubble formations translate to business matters. If the egg white forms lots of bubbles, that suggests a good and thriving business, while a small number of bubbles point to a failure in business. My egg white didn’t form any bubbles at all, and I have since decided to hit the pause button on the investment opportunity.

HOW LONG WILL CORONAVIRUS BLUES LAST? Psychic skill:

Subconscious

drawing

What is it? Calming the mind and letting your hand doodle without thinking of what to draw can reveal your true state of mind, say fans of this practice.

Jayne suggested I get some colouring pencils and paper, and sit somewhere tranquil before trying subconscious doodling. My efforts were messy and, I thought, indicative of my jumbled and sometimes fearful post- lockdown mood.

Jayne advised the colours I chose pointed to the way ahead.

My scribbles were predominantly yellow, which surprised me as it’s a colour that I would never consciously choose. Using the colour analysis chart on the Psychic Sisters website ( psychicsisters. co. uk), I read that yellow suggests hope, happiness and cheerfulness. I immediately felt more mellow about the rest of 2020.

WILL I WIN THE LOTTERY? Psychic skill:

Dice rolling What is it?

Astragalomancy, or dice divination, has been used in fortunetelling for 5,000 years. Reading the numbers you roll can be used to predict the future.

Using three dice and a piece of string to make a circle eight inches wide, I took several throws while asking if a lottery win was in my future. The website serenapowers. com has a table that explains what the numbers I threw foretold. My first throw meant an argument is coming, my second throw that I am about to part ways with a friend and the third heralded a substantial gift – so I haven’t given up on that big win just yet.
