Independence day looms ever closer!

-

OCTOBER 15 looms closer and closer and this date, Boris Johnson has made extremely plain to Brussels, is the last and final deadline for a trade deal between us. His reputation would be in tatters if he reneges on this.

Once again, as with Covid, both collective media and people have been mesmerised by a single phrase: No Deal.

But this is deceptive. Whatever happens, there will be a trading relationship between us, ie a “deal”.

But it may be under World Trading Organization rules. This has been portrayed by the still- vociferous Remainers as a catastrophe. Not so. Eighty per cent of the world trades under WTO rules and perfectly contentedly.

From our point of view these would be far more benign than being subject to the EU rule book and subordinate in every dispute to the findings of the European Court of ( so- called) Justice which never decrees on any issue than for Brussels, which appoints the judges in the first place.

Behind the arras furious preparations have been in progress for many weeks to enable us, if need be, to slip seamlessly from one trading rule book to the alternative. Under WTO rules we recover our sovereignty over trade, borders and laws, the last- named being absolutely crucial to our future prosperity.

Under newcomer Simon Case any attempt at sabotage will entail a rapid need to acquire a taste for hospital food. The mastery of the Remoaner clique will at last have come to an end. Their campaign will be dead. What’s not to like?
