KEY workers were among the luckiest lottery winners during 2020, research shows.

Delivery drivers, care staff, teachers and social workers are among those also in the money.

The roles that notched up the most new millionaires were engineering and manufacturing, while in equal second place were drivers ( bus, taxi and delivery) plus administrative and secretarial employees.

Next were care, social work, charity and retail staff, then builders and teachers.

Four EuroMillions jackpots went to the UK in 2020. Ryan Hoyle, a joiner from Rochdale, won £ 58,366,487 in April and said: “I think everyone I have ever known must have heard the news. I’ve had so many messages and texts from people I haven’t heard from in years... wishing me well.”

Last month, almost two years on from her win, former education worker Frances Connolly revealed she gave away around £ 60million of the £ 114million jackpot she shared with husband Patrick.

Mrs Connolly, 54, who lives in the North- east, wrote a list of 50 families to help immediately after she won. She said: “I have had more joy from changing lives than buying jewellery.”

In total, more than £ 4billion was paid out in prizes across the year, The National Lottery figures show. Of the big wins, 391 were £ 1million or more, so there was at least one new millionaire made every day.

During 2020, £ 800million of National Lottery Good Cause cash was targeted at groups and charities hit by the pandemic.

Andy Carter, senior winners adviser at The National Lottery, said: “This year has been one where the role of The National Lottery helping projects and communities all over the country has been even more crucial than usual.

“I am proud to be part of the team that helps each and every one of our big winners – but I am even prouder of the difference every player makes to the nation.”

The Lotto jackpot for tomorrow has hit a guaranteed £ 7.4million after the top prize in last Wednesday’s draw was not won by any

ticket.
