Stop! Skidding bus just misses house
A BUS hit black ice and stopped just short of smashing into a house yesterday as freezing temperatures continued to grip parts of England.
Residents said they saw a second collision moments after the bus crashed through a fence in Bingley, West Yorkshire.
A car also slid along the ice and went into the back of the bus, although a local said no one was injured.
He added: “Luckily, the driver of the car was going at a slow speed – otherwise, the car may have shoved the bus forward, closer to the house.
“It was scary. I wasn’t sure that the car was going to stop. It could have been a lot worse.”
The Met Office said: “Icy patches are expected to develop, especially on untreated surfaces, where snow has been melting on Sunday and where showers occur through the night.” Roads nationwide have been blanketed by snow, with a plough clearing Allenheads, in Northumberland.
The Met Office issued warnings for
further freezing temperatures and ice today, from Nottingham up to the North- east of England.
Bookmaker Coral slashed the odds on January being the coldest since records began to just 4- 6, with forecasters warning of a return of the “Beast from the East”. This happens
when the temperature in the stratosphere soars by 50C, which reverses Britain’s wind pattern – bringing in freezing blasts from Siberia.
Meteorologist Alex Burkill said: “While there will be hazards, it’s not really until the end of the week that we see any significant snow.”
