HAPPY HARRY Forty Winks? Fine as long as we win

Harry Winks shields the ball against Leeds, who admitted they had a lot to learn

NEGATIVE football? All Harry Winks cares about is winning.

Win is what Tottenham did for the first time in five Premier League games as they brushed aside Marcelo Bielsa’s plucky but erratic Leeds team.

In recent weeks Jose Mourinho’s side have been criticised for their hit- them- on- the- break, boring game.

But the combination of Harry Kane and Son Heung- Min punished Leeds for their brave but careless football.

Winks has found it hard to pin down a place in Mourinho’s side this season but made the most of this chance with a determined display.

“All we focus on as players is winning,” he said. “The style of play is for other people to talk about.

“It’s important to play well and we as players want to do that. We don’t want to not play football. But ultimately football is about winning.

“If you win, everybody is happy; if you play well and lose then everybody’s not happy.

“We have a different manager now, with a different philosophy and a different style. The culture of the manager is to win and as players we have that mindset.”

Winks, who has started only five league games this season, admitted: “I’ve had good games when I’ve been in and games where I’ve been left out, which has been difficult.”

Leeds started well but Ezgjan Alioski foolishly tripped Steven Bergwijn in the area and Kane rattled home the penalty.

Then Kane skipped past Pascal Struijk to find Son with a delightful pass to score.

Leeds gave the ball away far too often and their young keeper Illan Meslier was badly at fault when Toby Alderweireld’s header slipped through his hands for the third.

Luke Ayling admits Leeds are still getting to grips with the Premier League.

“I said to the lads in the dressing room – that is what they can do,” said Ayling.

“We had the ball, they turn it over, and then a great cross from Harry Kane and Son with those runs is so hard to defend against.

“But us boys are still learning in this league. It’s still a good start.”
