Mary’s scone recipe is our great British bake offering

MARY Berry’s scone recipe was among our favourites last year – but the crumbly treat was ultimately whisked off the top spot by an American import.

Britons became obsessed with fluffy pancakes in 2020, according to the most searched- for recipes on the BBC Good Food website.

Despite the March lockdown spawning a craze in baking banana bread, right, the

BBC’s American- style pancake recipe had a staggering 3.5 million hits from bakers.

Britons have enjoyed recreating the US diner classic all year, whisking up countless pancakes with plain flour, baking powder, caster sugar, salt, milk, butter and an egg.

Banana bread, Mary Berry’s scones, shortbread and pizza dough made up the top five most searched- for BBC Good Food recipes of 2020.

Every week the website had an average 3.4 million unique UK browsers. That was a massive increase of 74 per cent on 2019. Baking proved to be a particular­ly popular activity during the various lockdowns across the nations. With 6.4 million unique UK browsers, Easter week proved to be BBC Food’s busiest.

However, Christmas Eve marked the biggest day of the year, with 1.5 million unique UK browsers heading to the site for help with Christmas dinner recipes.

The Hairy Bikers’ honey- glazed gammon recipe was the most viewed across Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, with BBC Food’s roast calculator the second most- viewed page on the site. Emily Angle, editor at BBC Food, said: “BBC Food has been helping people learn to cook and bake for two decades. And while 2020 was really tough for everyone, it was great to see more people than ever enjoying the amazing recipes and useful advice we have to offer.”
