‘Big screen future’ for TV’s Peaky Blinders

- By Mark Jefferies

BOSSES of hit TV drama Peaky Blinders have teased fans that it could be turned into a feature-length movie.

In a shock move, the drama’s sixth series, which began filming yesterday, will conclude star Cillian Murphy’s journey as gang leader Tommy Shelby on the small screen earlier than planned.

Series creator Steven Knight said: “Peaky is back and with a bang.

“After the enforced production delay due to the Covid pandemic, we find the family in extreme jeopardy and the stakes have never been higher.

“We believe this will be the best series and are sure fans will love it. While the TV series will be coming to an end, the story will continue in another form.”

Incredible

Knight had stated ahead of the release of season five that he expected a further three seasons would air.

He said at the time: “My ambition is to make it a story of a family between two wars.

“So I’ve wanted to end it with the first air raid siren in Birmingham in 1939. It’ll take three more series to reach that point.”

The decision means that Knight may choose to finish with a film or several feature-length epics on the big screen or with Netflix, who screen the show outside of the UK.

Peaky Blinders first aired on the BBC eight years ago, becoming one of its most popular dramas. Episodes get audiences of over seven million and the show has won several Baftas.

Show boss Caryn Mandabach added: “Steve’s scripts are incredible and mark the end of an epic story that has entranced audiences since it first started in 2013. But the world of Peaky Blinders will definitely live on.”
