British stars dominate in the Golden Globe nomination­s

THE Crown led the way as British talent dominated nomination­s for the Golden Globes – the first glitzy Hollywood awards event of the year.

The Netflix drama is up for six gongs including Top TV Drama and Best Actress nods for Olivia Colman as the Queen and Emma Corrin who portrayed Princess Diana.

The pair are vying with Jodie Comer for her assassin in Killing Eve.

Emma, 25, was delighted to be recognised for her breakout role, saying on Instagram: “A real honour to be named amongst a group of such talented and inspiratio­nal women!

“Working on The Crown was the most magical experience in no small part thanks to the incredible cast and crew.” Josh O’Connor is up for Best Supporting Actor as Prince Charles, while Helena Bonham Carter got a nod yesterday in the Best Supporting Actress category for playing Princess Margaret. US star Gillian Anderson was nominated for her turn as Margaret Thatcher. Hugh Grant is also flying the flag for his lead role in TV drama The Undoing while Gary Oldman is nominated as Best Actor for the movie Mank, playing Herman J Mankiewicz who wrote the screenplay for Citizen Kane.

He is up against fellow Brits Sir Anthony Hopkins in The Father and Riz Ahmed for a drummer battling deafness in Sound Of Metal. Emerald Fennell gets a Best Film Director nomination for Promising Young Woman alongside Regina King and Chloe Zhao – the first time the category has shortliste­d more than one woman. Carey Mulligan

and Vanessa Kirby battle it out for Best Film Actress for Promising YoungWoman and Pieces of aWoman.

Sacha Baron Cohen has two nomination­s – Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, where he is up against James Corden for The Prom, and Best Supporting Film Actor for The Trial of the Chicago 7, where he takes on fellow Brit Daniel Kaluuya for Judas and the Black Messiah.

Normal People’s Daisy Edgar-Jones is nominated for Best Actress in a Mini-series or Motion Picture for TV, as is Anya Taylor-Joy for The Queen’s Gambit. Both series vie for best TV drama. John Boyega is up for a supporting gong for Small Axe.

The virtual ceremony takes place on February 28.
