Ways to eat a Jaffa Cake

- By Tim Stewart

DO you need to know for certain if your love is the right one as we approach Valentine’s Day? Then watch them eat a Jaffa Cake.

The treats can be munched in 520 different ways – and couples can check they are compatible from their choices, say scientists.

Exactly how to eat them has long been debated by fans with 69 per cent convinced their way is correct.

Some 28 per cent have argued with another admirer of Jaffa Cakes about their eating technique.

Dr Geoff Ellis found five variations in biting from a poll of 2,000 adults.

Taking two chomps is the most popular – 52 per cent – followed by a single mouthful (26 per cent) and nibbling the edge to leave the filling until last (24 per cent).

Dunking

Dr Ellis factored in five possible permutations for the order of eating the chocolate, sponge and jelly and preference for the orange, cherry, pineapple and passion fruit fillings.

He even probed preferences for dunking from the outset or in the middle of eating, splitting snacks, eating more than one at a time and sharing with others – calculating that there are 520 unique methods.

Dating expert Jo Hemmings profiled the top 10 snackers.

She said: “Someone who eats their Jaffa Cakes in the same way as you might be the obvious choice, but in compatibility terms that’s not always the case. Finding someone who doesn’t do everything as a carbon copy of the way you do can bring intrigue and excitement.”
