Turn a different corner
WHETHER working from home is here to stay or not, it’s good to have a dedicated desk for admin so your kitchen table remains free from piles of papers. You don’t need to sacrifice a whole room but it takes some thought to create a functional yet stylish workspace.
Sam Baldry, head of design at online furniture firm Swoon Editions, suggests identifying an awkward or unused corner of your home.
“Revamp dead space and add a small desk to separate your workday from your downtime,” says Sam, “but keep work life out of the bedroom or you won’t ever feel like you have had a chance to relax.”
Swoon has a selection of desks, chairs and shelving that are stylish rather than corporate and that’s a look that John Lewis & Partners’s in-house design team has also managed to perfect.
Its new spring and summer collection features the Natural Scandinavian trend, a collection of furniture in pale wood combined with warm neutral textiles such as soft linen and textured rugs.
But one of the most ingenious solutions for working in a home with little space to spare has come from the British office storage company that makes classic metal MultiDrawer filing cabinets.
Bisley’s new Belong collection was designed last year in response to working from home and includes the Hideaway wall desk – a wall-mounted bureau that folds down to provide a work surface and storage then folds away at night to look like a simple cupboard.
