Macaw who brings colour to our Peaks

- By Lucy Harvey

A MULTI-coloured macaw has been specially trained to soar across the skies over the Peak District.

Motley was photographed taking in the scenery by his owner Chloe Brown.

The zoo biology student raised him from 21 weeks old and even hand-fed him. She decided to research free-flying – where birds are trained to fly outdoors without restraint and return to their handler.

She said: “Free-flying looked to be an incredible way to bond with your bird and offer it a somewhat natural way of life. In March 2020 we practised recall training, improving his skills, until I got to the point he was fully trained to free-fly outside.”

She described the careful process as “training, patience and finding what motivates the bird”.

LOCH Ness is still proving to be a monster hit with tourists as it came joint top in a poll of our favourite places to visit in Britain. It shared first place with Lake Windermere in Cumbria while the London Eye and the Tower of London, were a capital idea for a must-see day out. And when it comes to the coast, Devon and Cornwall are among the best places to relax.

But we enjoy drier land at the Yorkshire Dales and Snowdonia is adored. Sixty-seven per cent of Britons have desperately missed being able to visit our beauty spots during the past year. And 58 per cent hope to visit their favourite destinations as soon as restrictions are lifted.

Forty-seven per cent believe we are blessed with some of the most beautiful views in the world. A staycation is preferred over a foreign holiday by 57 per cent.

David Horne of London North Eastern Railway, who commissioned the survey, said: “It’s clear to see that as a nation we’re proud to be home to some amazing views.”

The new series of BBC 2 show Interior Design Masters, presented by Alan Carr, may have a big budget and lavish makeovers, but it only takes one statement piece to lift a room.

And with signs that lockdown restrictions may soon be eased, now is a great time to give your home a boost – ready to wow friends and family when they can finally visit.

Whether you’re looking for a dramatic sofa or an accent chair for an instant impression; quirky champagne flutes which will be the envy of your dinner party friends, or a natty bookcase to show off what you’ve been reading over lockdown, we’ve found stylish bargains to do the trick.

And unlike the ambitious wannabes booted off the show if they fail to impress, we reckon our budget buys are all winners.
