Vow to plant 50 trees for every 0-0 football draw

- By Steph Spyro

FIFTY trees will be planted every time a British football match ends 0-0.

Entrepreneur and activist Dale Vince is behind the environmental campaign to help create a greener Britain.

Dale, 59, owns Forest Green Rovers – dubbed the greenest football club in the world – who have already kickstarted the campaign.

The industrialist is backing the Daily Express’s Green Britain Needs You crusade calling for the nation to play their part by going green.

He said: “Tree planting is an essential part of building a greener Britain.

“We’ve lost so many of our forests and woodlands in the past 100 years and with them the wildlife they support.

“Nil-nil is a scoreline with no winners or losers. But not anymore.

“With 50 trees being planted for every goalless draw in professional football in Britain, there will be a winner.

As an environmentalist, I’m keen on that. I’ll be willing our rivals to 0-0 results.”

Rovers, who play in League Two, have partnered with drinks brand Innocent for the scheme.

The initiative will take into account results across the four English divisions,

Scottish professional andWomen’s Super League.

The campaign is already committed to planting 6,350 trees following 127 nil-nil games so far this season. The total number of trees planted is expected to reach about 10,000.

Yesterday Dale joined player Nicky Cadden and academy boss Hannah leagues

Dingley to plant the first tree of the campaign by the team’s ground in Nailsworth, Glos.

Rovers became the world’s first vegan football club in 2015 and aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040.

The club is powered by wind and solar energy generated by Ecotricity, the company founded by Dale.
