TIGER WOODS IN CRASH HORROR
TIGER Woods needed emergency surgery for leg injuries yesterday – after his SUV rolled over several times in a horrific high-speed crash.
The 45-year-old golfing legend had to be cut free from the wreck beside a steep, winding road in California.
The wreckage of Woods’ Genesis GV80 ended up about 30 yards from the road, his luggage strewn beside it, with one of his trademark caps on top.
His agent Mark Steinberg confirmed the star had been taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Centre.
Woods, thought to be worth £585million, was driving “at a high rate of speed and lost control of the vehicle” in Ranchos Palos Verdes, according to sources.
They said alcohol was not believed to be a factor.
The father of two was in California for his annual Genesis Invitational golf tournament.
Woods has not played since he withdrew from the Dubai Desert Classic on February 3 and made his first public appearance earlier this week, days ago after undergoing back surgery.
He said at the time: “I’m feeling fine, little bit stiff. Still in the gym, still doing the mundane stuff that you have to do for rehab, the little things before you can start gravitating towards something a little more.”
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said: “Mr Woods was extricated from the wreck through the windscreen with the ‘jaws of life’ by Los Angeles County firefighters and paramedics.”
Yesterday’s accident comes three years after Woods admitted reckless driving in a deal with Florida prosecutors for being found behind the wheel under the influence of drink or drugs.
He was ordered to undergo various programmes and abstain from illicit drugs and alcohol during a 12-month probationary period.
