‘Just 10 months left to save Earth from climate meltdown’

- By Martyn Brown Senior Political Correspondent

BORIS Johnson yesterday urged the UN Security Council to put saving the planet at the top of its agenda before it’s too late.

As we head to what many see as the last chance to beat climate change – at November’s COP26 summit – he said urgent action was needed to avoid “worsening conflict and insecurity”.

Chairing the meeting, the PM said in a virtual address: “If this council is going to succeed in maintaining peace and security worldwide then it has got to galvanise the whole range of UN agencies and organisations into a swift and effective response.”

The COP26 climate summit in Glasgow will bring together heads of state, climate experts and campaigners to agree coordinated action on climate change.

Mr Johnson told the council Britain is also making the climate crisis its No1 economic priority.

With nine months left until the Glasgow conference, he said: “Ahead of the COP26 summit we’ll be putting climate change firmly at the top of the agenda for our G7 presidency as well.”

Underlining the urgency, Sir David Attenborough, 94, gave the UNSC this impassioned plea: “In November we may have our last opportunity to make the necessary step-change.”

The UNSC comprises five permanent members, China, France, Russia, the UK and the US, and 10 non-permanent members.

Sir David told delegates: “The security of the entire world depends on your decisions.”

The Daily Express is calling for a £21billion boost to the UK economy using green initiatives.
