TIGER CRASH HORROR
Woods’ career left in balance after he suffers ‘multiple leg injuries’
TIGER WOODS’S golf career could be over after he was badly hurt in a terrifying car crash near Los Angeles early yesterday morning.
The 15-time Major champion had emergency surgery on “multiple leg injuries” sustained in a singlevehicle accident when his car crossed the carriageway, went off the road and flipped over several times. Woods, 45, who was the sole occupant, had to
be pulled from the wreckage through a window of the car and was taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center by ambulance.
“Tiger Woods was in a single-car accident this morning in California where he suffered multiple leg injuries,” confirmed his agent Mark Steinberg in a statement.
“He is currently in surgery and we thank you for your privacy and support.”
Woods, who lives in Florida, was in California after hosting the PGA Tour’s Genesis Invitational on Sunday. He did not play as he was still recovering from a back operation he underwent in December.
He stayed on to film promotional footage at the Rolling Hills Country Club and played golf there with retired basketball star Dwyane Wade yesterday.
He was on his way back to the course just after 7am when the crash happened around two miles away.
He was conscious when emergency services arrived on the scene. On Sunday he admitted he was still having problems with his stiff back and would not commit to being fit in time for the
Masters. That is now a non-starter. A sheriff’s department spokesman confirmed the injuries are not life-threatening, but his future in golf will rest on whether he can make a full recovery from the horror smash.
In 1949, Ben Hogan survived a head-on crash with a Greyhound bus which left him with a double fracture of the pelvis, a broken collar bone and rib, a left ankle fracture and near-fatal blood clots.
He recovered not only to play on, but win, the US Open the following year.
Woods has made some big injury comebacks but this could represent the biggest challenge of all.
“I’m sick to my stomach,” said World No3 Justin Thomas. “To see one of my closest friends getting in an accident – I just hope he’s all right. I just worry for his kids. I’m sure they are struggling.”
Woods’s most recent competitive appearance was in December, when he teamed up with his 11-year-old son Charlie.
PGA commissioner Jay Monahan said: “Tiger is in our prayers and will have our full support as he recovers.”
