Gala night celebrates the ‘spirit’ of Sir Tom

- By Paul Jeeves

THE life of Captain Sir Tom Moore will be marked with a huge celebration on what would have been his 101st birthday, his daughter revealed.

Hannah Ingram-Moore said his “life and spirit” will be commemorated on April 30. It is believed a number of star names are being lined-up to perform while people are being encouraged to host mini-events.

Generosity

Among those likely to be involved will be singer Michael Ball, who recorded the Number One hit You’ll Never Walk Alone with Captain Tom.

Hannah said: “We will make sure it is an event everyone – in the UK and around the world – can get involved in.

“It will truly celebrate his generosity of spirit, the hope and joy he brought to millions and his sense of fun.”

She spoke days after the funeral of the war veteran who had raised more than £32million for the NHS by walking 100 laps of his garden.

A HUSBAND drowned his wife on a mini-break to Denmark to cash in her £3.5million life insurance policies, a court heard yesterday.

Property developer Donald McPherson, 47, allegedly murdered wealthy Paula Leeson after secretly taking out seven life policies on her.

Paula, 47, was from a wealthy family who ran a skip hire firm in Sale, Greater Manchester.

She drowned in an indoor swimming pool on a holiday in the village of Norre Nebel in Denmark in June 2017.

She died less than three years after marrying New Zealandborn McPherson, Manchester Crown Court heard yesterday.

Prosecutor David McLachlan QC told the jury: “While at first glance it appeared her untimely death was an accident, the evidence will show it was not.

“It was a sinister pre-planned killing and

the person responsible was her husband Donald McPherson. The motive was the oldest and simplest in the book. He stood to gain a vast fortune by her death.”

Mr McLachlan said Paula’s death was “far from accidental” adding: “She had a price on her head that could only be paid if she were dead.”

The court heard Paula died the day they were to fly back to Manchester from Copenhagen.

McPherson, who denies murder, told Danish police he had not seen her for 20 minutes then found her in the pool. He jumped in but could not pull Paula out as he had a bad shoulder.

However, he did drag his wife to the side of the pool where he gave her CPR before calling emergency services. Paramedics tried further resuscitation but Paula was declared dead.

The trial continues.
