30 years ago (1991)
Our front page covered the release of the Birmingham Six from prison after their convictions for the 1974 murder of 21 people in two pub bombings in the city were quashed by the Court of Appeal. Between them, they had served 96 years for a crime they didn’t commit.
Elsewhere, we told how PM John Major had killed off the poll tax in the biggest political U-turn in years.
94 years ago (1927)
The first Women’s Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge was held on the Thames. The two teams weren’t allowed on the river together and were supposed to be judged on speed, rhythm and style.
However it’s said the judges couldn’t agree on style and Oxford were declared the winners by 15 seconds.
56 years ago (1965)
In the wake of the Selma crisis in the US over voting rights of black citizens in the southern states, President Johnson told Congress: “We shall overcome” and reiterated his support for the Voting Rights Act.
The legislation, which outlawed racial discrimination in voting, became law on August 6, 1965.
