MEPs jump jab queues

- By Joe Barnes in Brussels

MEPs and their staff could be given special access to coronavirus vaccines while the public struggles to get the life-saving jabs, under plans seen by the Daily Express.

The European Parliament wants to fork out £3.6million on an exclusive inoculation centre in the heart of the Brussels bubble.

Euro politicians and their staff will have “access to the vaccination as soon as the doses are available”, said an internal memo seen by this newspaper.

Insiders say the EU-only immunisation hubs will likely give up to 50,000 eurocrats early access to Covid jabs.

Similar facilities are being planned to ensure officials at the European Commission and Council all get shots.

It will come as a bitter blow to European citizens who have been forced to endure significant delays in the rollout of doses because of the EU’s shambles. To rub salt in the wounds, the EU Parliament’s vaccine centre will receive jabs free from the same pot used to supply Belgians.

Yet Belgium is inoculating its citizens slower than the EU average – administering doses to fewer than one in 10 adults.

Scarce supplies triggered by the EU Commission’s bungled joint buy-up scheme have forced the country to delay its mass vaccine programme.

The EU’s sluggish scheme is way behind Britain’s programme, which has delivered a first dose to more than 24 million people – almost a quarter of our population.

Romanian MEP Cristian Terhes said: “Brussels bureaucrats always find a way to get more privileges for themselves, while imposing on others more rules and regulations.”
