Heatwaves ‘will only get worse’

SUMMER droughts in Europe have been the worst in 2,000 years, scientists say.

They fear heatwaves will only worsen as the global climate warms.

Researcher­s studying modern and ancient tree rings found Europe has slowly got drier over two millennia.

But samples from 2015-18 show droughts are now much worse than anything from the past.

Prof Ulf Buntgen, of Cambridge University, said the “extraordin­ary” findings “could be devastatin­g for agricultur­e, ecosystems and societies”.

He added: “Our results show that what we have experience­d over the past five summers is extraordin­ary for central Europe, in terms of how dry it has been consecutiv­ely.”

The study is published in the journal Nature Geoscience.
