Heatwaves ‘will only get worse’

SUMMER droughts in Europe have been the worst in 2,000 years, scientists say.

They fear heatwaves will only worsen as the global climate warms.

Researchers studying modern and ancient tree rings found Europe has slowly got drier over two millennia.

But samples from 2015-18 show droughts are now much worse than anything from the past.

Prof Ulf Buntgen, of Cambridge University, said the “extraordinary” findings “could be devastating for agriculture, ecosystems and societies”.

He added: “Our results show that what we have experienced over the past five summers is extraordinary for central Europe, in terms of how dry it has been consecutively.”

The study is published in the journal Nature Geoscience.
