Public aren’t swayed by ridiculous racism claims

-

AFTER all the brouhaha of the Harry and Meghan interview and the lurid accusations that flowed from it, there is some comfort that the British people are able to step back and have a rational perspective on the whole circus.

The ComRes poll in today’s newspaper shows that 61 per cent do not believe the Royal Family is racist – and nor are they. It was a ridiculous assertion.

Although admittedly this view was stronger among older respondents, even 52 per cent of 18 to 34-year-olds agreed.

If you look at the Queen’s heroic work with the Commonwealth – including her strong line on apartheid in South Africa – or Prince Charles’s famous speech in 1993 in which he said he wanted to respect all faiths, our Royals have led the way on these issues, usually a step ahead of politicians.

We can also see in the fantastic work of the Prince’s Trust or the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme how the focus has been on community cohesion and a sense of shared British identity.

It is telling that the poll underlines how beloved the Queen is and how a majority think she deserves an apology from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

As for them, it is clear from the survey that the British people mostly want the couple to remain in America – California seems to suit their lifestyle and outlook.

All this proves that, once the dust settles, the common sense of the British people comes through strong and firm, both qualities that our Monarch herself embodies.
