In the pink... burst of spring on way

- By Mark Reynolds

GORGEOUS pink cherry blossom lights up this garden yesterday to herald the arrival of spring.

The beautiful scene at RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey follows a week of fine sunny weather.

And there’s more on the way, with temperatures set to climb as high as a balmy 66F (19C) before Easter next weekend.

The warmer weather coincides with the dawn of easing lockdown restrictions.

Pub gardens and outdoor dining areas are set to reopen in England from April 12, with the prospect of a welcome drink in the sunshine getting ever closer.

Forecasters said the long winter chill will be ushered away by warmer air crossing Britain just after the weekend.

Yesterday, families enjoyed sun-drenched walks in the Royal Horticultural Society gardens at Wisley, near Woking, where the stunning cherry blossom was on full show.

But next week’s rise in temperatures, after the clocks change to British Summer Time on Sunday, will not necessarily mean non-stop sunshine, experts warned.

Rain and winds are also expected to accompany the warmer conditions.

However, the weather will feel spring-like throughout.

Temperatures are expected to climb to 66F in London and the South-east by Tuesday, though only reaching 57F in the North.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Temperatures are likely to start rather warm for parts of the South and South-east.

“Overall, there is a reasonable signal for generally settled weather for most through this period, with drier than average and brighter conditions.

“Temperatures are likely to be at or above average, with any cooler interludes likely to be short-lived, and mostly across the North.”

Last week, Britain recorded its warmest day of the year so far, with temperatures in Edinburgh reaching 66.2F.
