- By Adrian Hearn

WE spend up to 12 years of our life feeling tired and resort to caffeine and sugary snacks to cope, research found.

It revealed lockdown has made us even wearier with youngsters suffering most.

Nearly half say we are more worn out since the pandemic hit but that rises to 68 per cent among under 24s.

The average adult spends three-and-a-half hours a day feeling lethargic. This is blamed on poor sleep (55 per cent) and being stuck inside (36 per cent).

As a result, more than four in 10 are worried about how they will have the energy to cope when they get back to normal.

Already the same number have four or more coffees to get through the day.

A third have four or more sugary snacks to get an energy boost, said the survey of 2,000

adults for California Almonds. When they are worn out, 42 per cent of people struggle to concentrate, 28 per cent find doing household tasks hard and 15 per cent have problems communicating.

Nutritionist Rob Hobson said: “While coffee and sweet treats provide a quick hit, they also cause sugar crashes which leave you feeling even more sluggish.

“Eating mindfully and making smart snacking choices can make a significant difference to your energy levels.

“Sustained energy sources last for longer because they slowly release the energy we need to keep us going.”

His tips for feeling more energetic include focusing on the positives – like lockdown easing – getting outdoors and ditching sugar.
