In-form Fleetwood faces a Texas shootout with big guns of DeChambeau
TOMMY FLEETWOOD will go head-to-head with Bryson DeChambeau today at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play to fight for supremacy in Group Five. Fleetwood beat France’s Antoine Rozner 4&3 at the Austin Country Club yesterday and will go into the last 16 as group winner if he beats the
US Open champion. But DeChambeau can overhaul the Englishman after bouncing back from a shock opening loss to world No64 Rozner to beat South Korea’s Si Woo Kim 2&1.
Big-hitting world No5 DeChambeau, right, said: “I
felt like I was playing good golf but there were things occurring that I couldn’t explain.
“I hit a great drive on the 12th but came right up against the face of the bunker.
“I am a little more aggressive in matchplay. That is why you see weird stuff happening.
“I like being aggressive. It can get you in good positions and sometimes it can hurt you.”
Matt Fitzpatrick kept his hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive with a comprehensive victory over Canada’s Corey Conners.
Fleetwood’s fellow Englishman lost to three-time Major winner Jordan Spieth on Wednesday but bounced back to thump Conners 5&4. Fitzpatrick won four holes in a row from the ninth to move six up with six to play. World No2 Justin Thomas cannot progress after losing to defending champion Kevin Kisner.
Thomas came into the week on the back of winning the Players Championship but lost 3&2 to Matt Kuchar on day one and 2&1 to Kisner yesterday.
Kisner looked to be cruising to victory when he moved four up after seven holes but lost three holes in a row from the 11th before making a vital birdie on the 16th.
