Thefts alert as we invest in our own beer gardens

-

THE sun is shining, lockdown rules are easing, and Britons are looking to invest in their gardens to get them ready for summer.

Up to six people can now meet outdoors in England, which includes gatherings in private gardens as well as public spaces.

With overseas trips unlikely, holidaying in your own back garden is the ultimate staycation, and Britons plan to spend more than £10 billion to make the most of it.

New garden furniture, barbecues or pizza ovens and landscaping are the most popular additions.

Some homeowners have gone further by installing home offices, bars and hot tubs, according to new research from Direct Line Home Insurance.

Director Rob Fleet said those who are lucky enough to have gardens benefitted during lockdown: “With bars, hot tubs and offices springing up across the UK, staying in the garden could be the new going out in 2021, as it is a safe place to reconnect with friends and family.”

Fleet said to make sure valuable items are covered in case of theft or damage.

“With the average household spending more than £700 on their gardens during lockdown, having an up-to-date home insurance policy can give you peace of mind,” he added.

While most insurance policies may cover some garden theft, whether your claim is approved could depend on your policy and how well you have looked after your valuables.

Bikes, tools and garden equipment are prime targets for thieves, so lock any sheds and outbuildings, as insurers may only pay out if there is evidence of forced entry.
