TIMETABLE FOR SATURDAY’S FUNERAL PROCESSION

The Duke of Edinburgh’s ceremonial royal funeral will take place on Saturday April 17 at 3pm in St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.

The Duke is at the moment at rest in the Queen’s Private Chapel. 1

There will be no public element to the funeral as It will take place entirely in the grounds of the castle – but it will be televised.

2.40pm The bearer party made up of His Royal Highness’s special relationsh­ips – the Royal Marines, Regiments, Corps and Air Stations – will place the coffin on to a specially modified Land Rover at the State Entrance. 2

2.45pm The procession will leave for the

West Steps of St George’s Chapel, led by the Band of the Grenadier Guards, followed by the Major General commanding Household Division and Service Chiefs.

The route will be lined by members of the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, the Highlander­s, 4th Battalion Royal Regiment of Scotland and the Royal Air Force.

The Prince of Wales and members of the Royal Family and staff from His Royal Highness’s Household will follow on foot as the coffin is taken to St George’s Chapel. The Queen will arrive separately.

2.53pm A band from The Rifles will play the National Anthem as the coffin enters Horseshoe Cloister and finish as the Land Rover arrives at the West Steps. The West Steps will be lined by a dismounted detachment of the Household Cavalry. 4

A Royal Navy piping party will pipe the ‘Still’ once the Land Rover is stationary at the foot of the steps.

The bearer party will lift the coffin and proceed up the West Steps, halting on the second landing. The piping party will then pipe the ‘Side.’ 5

3pm The coffin will pause for the national minute’s silence.

The funeral service will begin as the coffin enters St George’s Chapel and is carried in procession to the catafalque in the Quire - a simple marble slab which is the entrance to the Royal Vault. 6

Following the funeral service the marble slab descends into the Royal Vault.
