Toni Hendry, the salon manager at Hari’s Hairdresse­rs in Chelsea, said she opened at 6am. “It’s been outrageous.

“We have a waiting list of 3,000 customers and it’s taken us three to four weeks to schedule all the bookings in.”

Michelle Loriga, the owner of Divas Hair Salon, says it is “very strange” to be back. Her business has been closed for 16 weeks and she says the “nerves are unbelievab­le” as she reopened her doors. “I don’t understand why because I’ve done the job for a lot of years.

“There’s so much pressure on us, the next few weeks are unbelievab­ly busy, it’s the pressure of not having any gaps in your day, trying to stay on time and not keep people waiting and we don’t know what we’re expecting as we haven’t seen people for so long.”

Neil Randall, chief executive of Anytime Fitness UK, said. “There was a bit of nervousnes­s last night if I’m honest, it’s a little bit like Christmas.

“We’ve only traded three of the last 12 months. It’s fantastic to see everyone here. All but two slots are booked for today.”
