Heartache as cancer girl dies on her wedding day

- By Phoebe Fuller

A 21-YEAR-OLD cancer sufferer died on the day she was due to marry the “love of her life”.

Chloe Askey was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in October and started chemotherapy soon afterwards.

Despite the treatment her condition did not improve, so she and her family made plans for her to marry before she became too ill.

Chloe died on Monday, the day she and her partner Hakeem had chosen for their wedding date.

Hakeem’s mother, Kerry Patel, said in an online fundraiser for Chloe: “Two days after her birthday she started chemo which was a really hard time for Chloe. But her soulmate and love of her life Hakeem was there by her side to help her through.

“Because of the horrid Covid, Chloe was not able to really do much in-between chemo sessions,

“Chloe got poorly after operation only six weeks-ish ago. Then on Friday we were told she was allowed home but she was very poorly and may not have long. “None of us thought it would only be three days. Chloe’s poorly body just couldn’t hold on long enough” Chloe, of Rotherham, was studying for a degree in animal welfare. She had worked at Thornberry Animal Sanctuary in Anston, Sheffield, for two years as part of the cattery team. Helen Connelly, general manager, said: “She cared about the animals and took delight in trying to find them perfect homes.”

Helen said Chloe wanted to make a career out of working with big cats in the wild.

She said: “She went out to Africa with college and did a lot of work with the big cats out there, so longer term that’s where she wanted her career to go.”
