Wessexes touched by Duke’s sea of tributes

- By Richard Palmer and Steph Spyro

AN emotional Earl and Countess of Wessex viewed a raft of tributes to the Duke of Edinburgh at Windsor Castle yesterday.

Prince Edward and Sophie were joined by daughter Lady Louise Windsor as they read cards and messages before today’s funeral.

The flowers have been left outside the castle by the public and sent by dignitaries.

They include wreaths and messages from Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and the Royal Navy.

The trio of Royals spent around 15 minutes looking at hundreds of flowers and other tributes outside St George’s Chapel, where the Duke’s final service will be held.

Sophie, 56, could be heard saying, “How sweet” while they looked at handwritten letters from children. The Royal Navy left a tribute reading: “In gratitude for an exceptional life of service from all ranks of the Royal Navy. Fair winds and following seas.”

The Wessexes, along with other members of the Royal Family, have been supporting the Queen after the death of her husband.

Officials had asked the public to avoid gathering in crowds and

leaving tributes that could become a focal point.

But more people came yesterday to place flowers and artwork paying tribute to the Duke outside the 950-year-old castle.

Some spoke of their admiration for the late Duke while gardeners readied the grounds for today.

Sarah Hawkins, 35, from Marlow, Bucks, said: “I think when someone who has been a great public figure passes away, you need to be here to pay your respects.

“I hope the Queen and the entire Royal Family know just how much the Duke meant to the nation.”

Later, looking solemn and dressed casually, the Countess and Louise went shopping in Windsor town centre.

Protection officers with the Royal duo urged people not to follow them, adding they were tending to “private” business.

It is believed the pair picked up some shoes for Louise and did some other last-minute shopping before the funeral.

Lady Louise – who inherited her grandfather’s interest in carriage driving and was cheered on by him in competitions – wore a grey jumper and black skirt.

Sophie wore a blue jumper and matching jeans with suede shoes and carried a clutch bag.
